For the last 7 years or so, I’ve been involved in many different projects. I’ve educated people on ink work (on my own time paid/unpaid) I make many different things (polymer clay sculpture jewelry, original artwork, prints, paintings, and sketches.) I sell at Perfect Diversity in New Glasgow currently under my brand “Moon Chips.” I stay as involved with the community as I can! I’m new to the area as of August 2018, so I’m just starting to dip my toes in.

DENISE LYNCH – Ceramic Artist

Growing up on the shores of Nova Scotia, there was always a patch of dark red clay to be found when the tide went out. I’d dig it up, take it home and make gifts for those I cherished. Today, I continue in that tradition and create timeless pieces to share with you.

My pieces are inspired by rhythmic patterns of scrolling and interlacing lines with finishes that invoke an old world aesthetic.

During the making process, as forms are created, they call to complementary shapes and decoration. I would state that “the piece designs itself, I just show up”. Bronze, gold, silver, satin, charcoal, old white and mother of pearl are among my favorite glazes as they compliment the timelessness of the scrollwork designs.

I am a juried member of Craft Nova Scotia, member of the Nova Scotia Potters Guild and Creative Pictou County.

Richard & Somebody’s Kids

Richard & Somebody’s Kids is an easy going Halifax band that plays fun and gritty original country/rock and bluesy music. Grab a ringside seat and enjoy the full card.

With the influence of americana, country, and folk, this unique band has a little something for everyone. This is storytelling with a twist. The rocky blues licks and Texas slide guitar swing with a driving keyboard bass, and the filling sound of ’80’s Hammond organ.

Richard’s unique story-telling and insight to human nature comes from decades of training boxers in Halifax. Richard’s command of the stage toes the line of duality between an old school fighter and an insightful musical poet. With a wry sense of humour, he playfully banters with Julian and Melissa on stage and somehow always manages to pull ringside fans into his corner as he rolls with the punches.

This three or four piece band (depending on size of venue) is not a cover or dance band. This band fits nicely in a festival, a house party, a soft seater theatre, and intimate pub venues.

I started making short videos with friends during my teens and in the last fiften years I’ve conducted several hundred interviews, created web content for dozens of local and national businesses, and hosted a few television programs including “The Camera Show”, an Eastlink TV mini-series that teaches viewers “tips tricks and techniques to help them get the most out of their camera”.

Andrew Spicer

Andrew Spicer is a one-man-rock-band from New Glasgow, Nova Scotia, Canada. He operates with a DIY approach; creating all the backing tracks from scratch and engineering a unique system on which to do it. Consisting of a laptop, guitar and vocals, the band might only have one member, but has the sound of a full rock band.

He has played as a solo unit since the early 2000’s. Having been in full bands over the years, Andrew discovered the freedom of making music his own way. Which was not an option while in a band with other musicians.

Andrew’s songs are built with heavy, punky guitar riffs mixed with catchy pop melodies.

He has released 3 full length albums and 3 EP’s since 2006, and a new album; Bi-Polar Bear set for release MAY 18th 2018, featuring the lead single “Astronaut” and the newest single “Rotten”.

Dawn MacNutt

“Born and grew up in New Glasgow, I remarried and returned to rural Pictou County in 2006 after living and working in Dartmouth for forty years. Weaving is the basis of my sculptural forms, interpreted in wire, willow, and sometimes bronze. My work is inspired by human form…sometimes by the beauty of human frailty”.

Dawn’s work has been published and shown in over 100 exhibitions, including 22 solo exhibitions locally and internationally. Solo shows are scheduled for studio Lab Gallery, New Glasgow, May 2019, and “A Fortunate Adversity” at Craig Gallery, Dartmouth in May 2020.

Dawn received her education at Mt. Allison and Dalhousie Universities; and also studied and taught at NSCAD. Collections of Dawn’s work can be found in the Canadian Museum of History, Canadian Capitol Commission Ottawa, American Museum of Design New York, Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, Nova Scotia Collection Art Bank, and many public and private commissions. Presentations given include: “Tapping the Creative Spirit”, “Making Dreams Come True”, “Commissions”, and “Exhibitions”.

Dawn is a member of the following organizations: Royal Canadian Academy of the Arts, Master Artisan of Craft Nova Scotia, Visual Arts Nova Scotia, International Sculpture Center and Creative Pictou County. She also has Hon. Doctorates from both Mt. St. Vincent University and Mt. Allison University for her contribution to the Arts.

Well… I chose educator, because I do educate my children in things… but I’m not really artsy. I don’t have a thing that I do that can be labelled in the options list above. I don’t really know what I’m good at necessarily, but I enjoy being influenced by local artists and local art. I enjoy seeing local opportunities for creative outlets and decided to join this group on the advice of my friend Carolyn. She said that since I’m trying new things lately, this might be a great group to become a member of. I’m stretching out my wings and trying to see where I fit… but I’m not really an educator (I have no formal training in education at all)… nor am I an artist… just a doer of things that show up 🙂
Enjoy the sun!

Carolyn Vienneau

Born into a family that has fished the Northumberland Strait for four generations, Carolyn Vienneau grew up with the love for the sea and the fishing boats that sail it. This has been a great influence in her art. She incorporates the characteristics of the sea into her paintings.  Her energetic brush strokes, her play with colour and contrast, and her use of opposites–calm and turbulence, rough and smooth textures—are all engaged in her paintings to stimulate interest.

Under the Influence:

Since the 1970’s she has started studying seriously by taking several workshops every year with well-known internationally known artists such as Mike Svob, Brian Atyeo, Stephen Quiller, Alvero Castagnet, Pat Dews, and Bob Burridge . The other artist that has greatly influenced Carolyn is Sandi Komst. Sandi has introduced Carolyn to Plein Air Painting and has taken her all over the Maritimes to paint outside. Although their influence is reflected in Carolyn’s work, she developed her own style and considers herself a self-taught artist on a life-learning journey of art.  Carolyn experiments and teaches others in oil, watercolour, acrylic and fused glass. Carolyn’s paintings are found in private collections throughout Canada, the United States, UK, and as far away as Australia. In the province of Nova Scotia, her paintings are for sale at Teichert Gallery, in Halifax, Gallery 215, Maitland, Blue Minds Gallery in Bear River, Fraser Cultural Centre, Tatamagouche and in Pictou they are available at Art 2 Sea Art Gallery on Main Street and at her business Strokes of Colour Art Studio.

Changing circumstances dictate changing focus.  These days Carolyn is spending more time doing Plein Air  painting in acrylic, oil, and watercolour, and fusing glass in her kiln. With Carolyn, there is never a dull moment, never a creative lapse.

Pictou-Antigonish Regional Library

The Pictou-Antigonish Regional Library is one of 9 regional public libraries across Nova Scotia. The regional library system was created through provincial legislation, the Public Libraries Act. Each regional library is governed by an independent library board. Funding is provided by the Province of Nova Scotia, through the Provincial Library (Department of Communities, Culture & Heritage) and by each municipal unit in the Pictou-Antigonish area. The Library Board is also mandated to raise at least 3% of its overall operating budget. The actual library facilities are owned, and maintained by the municipal units, while staffing, collections, and services are provided by the board.

The Pictou-Antigonish Regional Library Board has 10 members. Each of the 8 municipal councils appoints one elected official to the Board and the Minister of Communities, Culture & Heritage appoints 2 community volunteers. The Board is responsible for setting policy, setting and overseeing the operating budget, ensuring a financial audit is completed annually, and for hiring the Chief Librarian. The Chief Librarian, who must have a graduate degree in Library and Information Science, acts as secretary to the Board and ensures the region is operated and developed according to policy.

The Board has an annual budget of over 1.7 million dollars, employs 51 full & part-time staff and several youth grant positions. There are 7 branch libraries, a Books-by-Mail service, Outreach Services, and an extensive virtual library.

The Pictou-Antigonish Regional Library Board is proud of its community-driven approach to services, understanding the library is only as successful as the community in which it operates. Beyond the traditional library services, the Board assists municipalities and communities with Web development, oversees the development of the Adopt-a-Library Literacy Program (hosting an RCMP Officer within its operations), creates innovative and award-winning digital content through NovaStory.ca, manages the Community Access Program in the two counties, and much more.
